My idea of the new prep draws inspiration from my own community of diverse prep school alums, a diverse and modern uptown chic as portrayed in the reimagined Gossip Girl, and the appropriation of prep classics by Black artists throughout history.
6 Item Capsule Collection, reinterpreting 5 signature Tommy styles (The Hoodie, The Polo, The Chino, The Shirtdress, and The blazer) + an original KHIRY x Tommy Necklace. Each piece is meant to be a 1/1 masterpiece, individually crafted for the client with access to everything, who has truly seen it all.
The process began with research and definition of the idea of "The New Prep". Through image research, I compiled a moodboard of references to unexpected prep connections, focusing on diverse, creative, iconic New Yorkers, who subvert and push prep forward through new takes on styling, accessories, details. What also emerged was an emphasis on handcraft, stemming from the idea that the pieces should feel absolutely unique, like personal talismans of a globally informed style, grounded by Tommy Hilfiger prep classic styles.
I then began to sketch widely in graphite, exploring techniques and silhouettes to bring the story to life.
From the wide sketching, I began to curate the final looks per the styles requested in the brief (1 Polo/Polo Dress, 1 Shirt/Shirtdress, 1 Hoodie, 1 Blazer, and 1Chino). I sketched the final looks in Procreate, focusing on a mixture of a nineties primary color sheme evocative of Tommy's heyday and connection to Hip Hop, and the brand's iconic Red White and Blue.
Two of the collection's pieces were made by an external team of tailors, the bomber jacket and chinos. To communicate the pieces complex design intent, I opted to make flat sketches specifying all design details. Flats made by hand in Procreate.
I sourced vintage Tommy Hilfiger items globally online, finding standout textiles to upcycle into the ultimate, layered masterpiece.
I draped the vintage items on the form, using my Procreate sketches as a guide for my desired composition, while making adjustments to the design to optimize the fit and design of the actual pieces sourced.
Hardware was designed and modeled in Rhino 3D, and cast in polished brass.
