Originally shown in KHIRY SS23 Runway Show, Fantasies, an examination of societal fantasies, the upcycled dress questions the realities of social ascent in our time.
A 1/1 Dress, constructed from T-Shirts of universities ranked among the Top 20 on Us News and World Report's Undergraduate rankings. The fabric, cut into curved diamond shapes, connects at tenuous points, revealing and straining to contain the body, forming a complex historical analysis of the ways that bodies and institutions relate.
The piece was worn by 4x Grammy award winning artist, SZA for promo for her SNL shoot. She organically shared video and photos and of the piece to her Instagram feed in a post that was liked 1.6 Million times. Vogue named the post the best fashion Instagram of the week, and peer publications mentioned the dress and credited the brand.
I sourced tees from as many of the Top 20 schools as were available in time for the runway show. I cut them into these network star shapes, forms that when composited would provide a symbolically tenuous connection, and leave the body exposed. I draped the star shapes on a dress-form and checked that the composite fabric would still provide some coverage, and fit the wearer.
